I am on a hunt to compile all possible “what it’s like to be PROFESSION” and put it in a blog for us to know what is really like to be your dream profession someday. And for my first post, I want to share to you my auntie’s experience as a tax accountant for an accounting firm in Dubai UAE. This seems to be a two job experience in one post – being a tax accountant as well as an overseas Filipino worker (OFW). So get aboard and let’s get started!
Just a few disclaimers before we jump. First this is not applicable for all accounting firms. Secondly we did not tackle all things that are related to tax accounting.
Things I hate…at some point!
Aunt said that there is just one thing that she really doesn’t like in her profession. It is neither the salary nor the company but it is simply the amount of hours she needs to work. Being a tax accountant requires a lot of hours of work. Typical working hours per week is about 40 and for a tax accountant, when things go busy, we are working 50 to 70 hours per week and you should be ready for that especially for busy season (that is from January to April and July to October). But for non-busy months, things go just like rest and cool. Here is the thing, if you do good job, people will always come to you and bringing in more tasks to do. Which is…hmmm, I’ll just keep it to myself.
What does she do as a tax accountant?
Basically tax accountant prepares tax returns for corporations, partnerships or really wealthy individuals etch. The whole process is so complicated but basically you are preparing tax returns.
What did she like about working as a tax accountant?
Everybody is super nice! They know how to handle stress. She thinks accounting firms in Dubai has this qualification of hiring people who can work under pressure and can handle high stress. Aunt said, she doesn’t yet experienced somebody yelling at her for she did a mistake or error. Everyone is professional and respect each other. People in accounting firms are helping out one another for they believe they are one team carrying just one name on their chest.
Aunt said that she definitely learned a lot working for accounting firms. Those skills that she get and learned are really transferable to anywhere industry you want to work.
To be specific, she said that learning “how to say No” and “time management” are the top things she learned in working for accounting firms.
